Caught red-handed!
Don't listen to the critics
Thank goodness The Beatles didn't!

"We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out."
~Docca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles, 1962~
I know I'm my worst critic, and anyone reading this probably suffers from that issue as well. I think we all just need to let go of the negative, eh? Here's to us!.... and The Beatles of course. Of course! =)

Boycott
Today I decided to boycott the purchase of any new toys ever again. Chloe has so many cute, fancy and/or noise-making toys that I'm always giving her to play with. But she tosses them to the side and much prefers playing with simple household items. For example, in this picture, curly ribbon and a straw! Some of her other favorite items: plastic spoons, tissue paper, the plastic from string cheese, magazines, water bottles, my cell phone, the TV remote, my camera case, sunglasses, .... you get the point. But her favorite, absolute favorite thing to play with: Mommy's hair. What a funny chica!

Name them one by one....
Today as I was sitting at the table feeding Chloe, I noticed this 'Count Your Blessings' decoration. It's always there, but today I really thought about the sentiment. We have so much to be grateful for! Let me share just a couple of my favorite blessings.

Chloe eating her favorite treat - lemon pudding!
I think this picture is a testament to the power of prayer! Chloe's smile brightens up the room and brings so much joy to my life! She is so chatty, I can barely keep up with whatever it is she's trying to tell me. And boy oh boy can this girl eat! She'll eat anything I give her, but it should come as no shock that her favorite treats are sweets! And she's thriving and growing. She's 15-months-old, but she's already growing out of her 18-month clothes!

I remember when I first found out about Chloe's condition, I read that children with West Syndrome often have trouble with eating (and therefore thriving/growth) and the majority of them are not expressive or interactive. I prayed that she would not have those problems.

And then there were three....
Two weeks before the baby shower I'm throwing her and six weeks before her due date, I get a call from my pal Gibbie. To my dismay, she was in labor! I told Gibbie that little Carter was already letting everyone know that HE is in charge around here! He is 5 lb. 6 oz. and 19 1/2" long. He's perfectly healthy and perfectly cute!

GO WEST!

It's official. I'm a football widow. I actually have been for awhile, but I've been in denial. But tonight was the first game, so there's no denying it now. Oby is a defensive coach at West High School. He loves it, and he's good at it. There's a really dynamic group of kids that attend that school, and I'm glad he gets to influence them. His dad also coaches there, so I think they have fun spending the time together. Chloe and I didn't make it to this week's game, but we will be attending the majority of them. Mostly because it will be one of the few times in the next three months that we'll be able to see Oby!

Go Panthers!

I am the Decisive Element
The last week or so I've been trying to put together a structured schedule so Chloe and I can get into a good routine. I remember when I decided to stop working, I thought life would magically become so much easier! Without 8 hours of work in a day, I imagined having everything completely under control. Oh my, was I wrong. I feel like I'm running a circus most of the time. I just barely get the necessities done, and hardly ever do any extras. Oh, and by the way, I think of making dinner for my family as an extra. Pathetic, huh! Lately I've been feeling bad about this and have a notebook where I've been trying to make my list of to-do's fit into a weekly schedule.Today when I was at the doctor's office, I pulled out my notebook. I started feeling overwhelmed, and going through my mental list of excuses of why it's hard for me to get everything done, so I decided to just bag the idea and continue my current routine of 'just getting by.' I put the notebook away in defeat.
Then I was just sitting there waiting for the doctor to come in, when I saw a quote hanging on the wall in front of me. I felt like whoever wrote the quote, wrote it for me on this day, in this moment, for my exact situation and excuse mentality. Here it is:
I am the Decisive Element
I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make a life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a person humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people only as they are, we are of no real value to them. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.
This quote inspired me incredibly, and it was a concept I could apply to all aspects of my life.... the importance of taking full responsibility for my actions/reactions and results. It also reminded me of something I learned from Sheri Dew at Women's Conference this year. She taught that the status quo is uninspiring. Our spirits yearn to progress, and that is why we are more motivated to do something difficult than something mediocre. I have learned that motherhood is the greatest potential in life. It is also the most challenging. I am anxious to embrace this challenge, and rise above mediocrity. This was a lesson I've learned before, but I'm grateful for the reminder!

Halloween in August??? Yep.
To say that my mother-in-law likes Halloween would be the understatement of the century.... Tami absolutely LOVES Halloween!!! And she has passed this love on to her children and grandchildren. Well, Oby's sister Taylor and her family are leaving us (to go back to law school in New Hampshire) after a wonderful summer together, and we won't see them again until December. So Tami decided to put up the haunted village and have a mini Halloween celebration tonight, so PJ & Henry didn't have to miss out on the festivities this year.
Crazy 8
Tonio, a.k.a. Anthony, turns 8 next week. We all got together at Liberty Park for a little celebration. It was a good time as always.

Sam shines in victory.
There were struggles.
Henry looks on as Izzy falls.
All in all, it was an enjoyable time for the spectators and athletes alike.

tiny triumphs

Chloe met a milestone yesterday... she plays with her toes! This may not seem like a big deal, but in our little world, this is a very big deal! She had an evaluation recently in which the nurse went through a checklsit of baby milestones. "Does she....?" I answered "No" a lot more than I would have liked. She is 15 months old and I was told she was like a 5-month-old in gross motor skills; a 7-month-old in fine motor skills; a 9-month-old in cognitive development; a 9-month-old in language skills, a 9-month-old in self-help skills; and a 9-month old in social/emotional development. This was a bitter pill for me to swallow. I'm a 'meets or exceeds' kind of gal, I don't like to be behind, and I don't like to be told my daughter is falling behind. But I know she's doing her best, and I'm doing my best to help her. And she is definitely progressing, because just last week when we did the evaluation, I had to answer "no" to the question, "Does she play with her toes?" Well, now you can see why I want to tell the world, "She's playing with her toes! She's playing with her toes!" Let's just say I know the pride Michael Phelps' mom must feel.

Olympics

Between the entertainment value of the opening ceremonies (I'm still in awe of that whole sh-bang), the inspiring stories of the athletes, the pride I feel for Team USA, the miracle that so many countries can come together in this time of turmoil, and the half naked men swimming and playing volleyball.... I just can't decide which is my favorite part! I guess I just love it all.

That Mother Goose really knows what she's talking about!
There Was a Little GirlThere was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead.
And when she was good,
She was very, very good,
But when she was bad, she was horrid.
~Mother Goose
This picture was taken of Chloe today, about five minutes after she finished screaming (for no apparent reason, mind you) for over an hour. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when she suddenly switched into smily-giggly mode (again, for no apparent reason), so I just took a picture. Then tonight when I was reading Mother Goose nursery rhymes before I put her to bed, I came across this one. My mom always says this to Chloe, but I thought it was just my mom's words. Apparently Mother Goose had a little Chloe of her own. At least someone understands my plight!
