Syracuse resident to create new park
Mom will raise money to build the handicapped-accessible playground.
By Andrew Maddocks

The Salt Lake Tribune

Chloe Bennett truly loves to swing, her mother Tara says. The 2-year-old swoops back and forth, laughing and smiling, her eyes beaming.

But any swing without high back support is dangerous for Chloe, born with a form of cerebral palsy, she cannot support herself. So Chloe relies entirely on her mother at nonaccessible parks to move around, stay upright, or even lie down in the sandbox.

"Chloe's not sitting on the sidelines crying, but I am, internally," Bennett said.

There isn't a single handicapped accessible park within an hour of Bennett's Syracuse home. Not only does Chloe love swinging and playing, but Bennett says the therapy associated with play is a critical part of Chloe's physical development.

So last month, Bennett decided to bring a wheelchair-accessible park to Syracuse herself.

She presented the idea to Syracuse City Administrator Rodger Worthen and City Council earlier this month. Officials are supportive, especially since Bennett intends to start a nonprofit organization and raise $800,000 -- her estimated total cost for the park -- herself -.

"I think it could be a great thing for city," Worthen said.

An accessible park features rubber surfaces easier to roll over than wood chips and ramps to the top of playground features so children, whether handicapped or not, can participate.

In early meetings, two potential sites emerged for the 2-acre playground: plots of land near the new Syracuse Fire Department building and in Jensen Nature Park.

The fire station site would be close to medical emergency services, Worthen said, and guide out-of-town visitors straight through downtown. Jensen Nature Park's established popularity would bring in more non-handicapped children, Bennett said, an important part of the plan.

With the city council's ongoing support, she hopes to have the tentatively named Sunshine Park open in less than five years.

Direction for the project came from of an article about Zachary's Playground in Lake St. Louis, Mo. Natalie Blakemore coordinated the construction of an accessible park for her son Zachary. Blakemore happens to be Syracuse City Councilman Doug Peterson's cousin.

Bennett hopes to connect with Blakemore, and streamline the fundraising and construction process even more.

Facing the obvious challenge of starting a nonprofit and raising nearly a million dollars, Bennett says she will draw on her experience volunteering for the Make a Wish Foundation and from business classes at the University of Phoenix. Once the Syracuse park is complete, Bennett dreams of building an accessible park in every county in Utah.

For now she wants to make sure Chloe, and other children with physical handicaps, can play independently. Playgrounds are a right of passage, and Bennett sees no reason why any child should miss out.

In her eyes, it's only a matter of time before Chloe moves from her backyard swing to the playground. It's all part of a lifelong pledge Bennett made to her daughter -- anything is possible.

"We might have to get creative and work hard," Bennett said. "But she'll always be able to do whatever she wants."

Headed to Bear Lake!

The Bennett family has a tradition of heading to Bear Lake about every summer. We stay on property right on the beach and have a great old time! We are headed for this year's Bear Lake outing tomorrow morning. We'll be there a week. We're sure to have a super fun time! Here are some flashback pix from years before....

Photo Shoot!

Today a photographer from The Salt Lake Tribune came to our house to take photos of Chloe. Unfortunately, he also took photos of me. I tried talking him into not using the pix of me, only of Chloe, but he said he wasn't actually in charge of which photo(s) they use. Anyway.... doesn't Chloe look cute for her big debut!?!?!?....

The story is scheduled to run in next Thursday's paper as part of the 'Up Close' section.

So since the story will be running, it's forcing me to get my funding and marketing strategies going in full swing. I've been working on the blog look and posts. You can check it out if you'd like!....

There's still much to be done. If I can just make it through the house finale (our contractor told us today that he thinks everything will be completely finished next Monday!), then we have our trip to Bear Lake next week (nothing to do except sit in the sun, play in the water, and eat? COUNT ME IN!)..... I'll really get going on my playground ideas once all that fun stuff is over!

Whatcha Been Up To?

I ran into some friends at Home Depot the other day. It was one of those times when I looked at my outfit as I was walking in, and thought, 'I hope no one sees me!' ....... and of course, I saw three people! Despite my best efforts to dart out of view, they caught me with paint in my hair, sawdust on my cheeks, ash in my eyebrows, and spray paint everywhere in between. And every one of them asked the same question: "Whatcha been up to?"

So since it seems everyone wants to know, here's the run-down.....

We have been stripping, sanding, resurfacing, painting, staining, sweeping, mopping, scraping, vacuuming, lifting, dragging, sawing, filling, installing and etching up a storm. Our house is coming along quite quickly, actually. It seems slow in the moment, but when I look at the progress we've made in just a few weeks, I'm pretty impressed! We can't take all the credit, though - Oby's dad has been a huge help!!! I think our deadline of 7/31 might actually be met! Now, if we can just stick to the budget.............

We saw Harry Potter. I liked it. It was a little long, and the ending was a little anti-climatic, but overall it was good.

I'm trying to get into a special education program through USU. I've passed the preliminary tests. Now, don't take that the wrong way - I'm no test-taking genius. It took two tries with the math test, but after a little refresher study session, I passed! The plan is to take some courses concurrently with actually teaching in a special education classroom. After one year, I'll have my teaching certificate (if all goes as planned, that is!)...... So, let's hope all goes as planned! I never would have thought I would become a special ed teacher, but since Chloe is starting special ed in less than a year, I thought it would be good to have a little education and experience under my belt. If nothing else, I can just be more comfortable with how things work if I run into any issues along her educational journey. I kept trying to talk myself of doing it right now. 'We're so busy with the house. I'm working on the playground. I should do it another time.' But then I realized, when will life be less busy? Ummmm, never. So I decided to go for it - no time like the present, right? Let's hope so!

The Salt Lake Tribune called and wants to do an article about my plans for the playground. An interview is scheduled for later this week. So I've been scurrying around trying to get all my ducks in a row with my marketing strategy and non-profit organization so when the article comes out, I can really be ready for people to see what's going on. Also, they want to take photos of Chloe and I. Um, hello, do they think a person who is renovating a house on a tight schedule and a tight budget has the time or money to get her hair cut or colored? And a pedicure?..... don't even ask what my feet look like! But I guess I'll have to squeeze some time in because they were pretty specific that they wanted to pictures to be of Chloe and I, not just Chloe. Trust me, I tried to talk them into that!

Speaking of cute Chloe, we're headed to Primary Children's Medical Center tomorrow for her spinal MRI. An EMG is in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of hospitals, my nephew had skin graph surgery and I haven't even been to see him! I'm a terrible aunt.

Speaking of relatives, my dad's cousins, Bill and Dolores, have been in town from Indiana. They are so darn cute! We're going to miss them when they leave tomorrow....

Speaking of awesome family members, how are we doing all this work on the house and taking care of Chloe, you ask? It would not be possible at all without our parent's help! I cannot thank them enough. Really. There aren't words that express that much gratitude. Sometimes a 'thank you' is all there is.

So enough about me. Whatcha been up to?

Yes!

Tonight while I gave a presentation to the city council about my dreams of building an accessible playground, initially the only things I noticed were my sweaty palms, shaky voice, and anxiety over the fact that the audio/visual guy hadn't got my power point presentation up in time.

Then I realized - they were all shaking their heads in agreement.... all the councilmembers, the mayor...... they were shaking their heads YES!

This positive reinforcement helped me to get through my presentation with more confidence - maybe a little too much confidence! I went over lots of details about the park and just came out and told them that I want them to donate two acres, community impact funds, and provide maintenance. I bit my tongue, and thought, 'That was too gutsy. They're going to hate me. I asked for too much and now they won't give me anything!'

At the end, I asked if they had any questions or comments. The only comments they had - and all of them made a comment - were positive. Things were said like: "We definitely want to help you do this," "We commend you for this undertaking," "Our community needs something like this," and my favorite - "How can we help?" During the presentation, I had mentioned that I made a goal to have the project complete in five years. The mayor said, "We would like to help you make this happen in two to three years."

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The article I read that inspired me to pursue this project was about a place called Zach's Playground. One councilmember said it was his cousin who did that playground. He gave me her contact information so she can hold my hand through the process. Can you imagine anything better? It's like I was given a little fairy godmother! Another councilmember said his brother and sister-in-law had built a playground in memory of their deceased child. He gave me their contact information so they could give me ideas with fund-raising, etc. They also told me there was another citizen who brought this idea to their attention last year, and they said they would give me her contact information so she can team up to help this come to fruition.

All in all, I felt like everything could not have gone better than it did! The next step is meeting with the councilmembers after they think about different options for the location. I have a location I really, really prefer and I went over all the reasons why in my presentation. I'm hoping they will mull over what I said and just go ahead and go with that location. LOL - I sure am demanding, er uh hopeful! After we determine the location, then I'll really dig in with marketing and fund-raising. But let's be honest, we've got to get the house done before I do much else, but it shouldn't be too much longer!

So - question - do you like the name we've come up with? It was actually my dad's idea. We were talking about the park idea once and Chloe was playing with a stuffed sunshine toy. He said, "How about calling it Sunshine Playground?" I love it, but want your opinions!

I have loads of ideas and I'll share them all with you once I get all my ducks in a row. I know I will have so much support with this project, and I'm glad because boy will I need it!

Hot Like Wow!

Between spending most of our time working on our house that hasn't had the central air installed yet and sleeping in our apartment that doesn't have a/c, we've also been outside where it has been hot! But we've been enjoying ourselves nonetheless. Here are a few things we've been up to lately (aside from the house, of course)....

Achievement Days Swimming Party!....

Lunch With Friends @ CPK!....

Other than that, the other major thing I've got going on is my accessible playground ideas in the works.

I'm scheduled to give a presentation at the city council meeting tomorrow night. Wish me luck!

Above Average!

Today Chloe had a speech therapy evaluation. The therapist just watched Chloe interact and asked me a bunch of questions about how Chloe responds to communication and what she does to communicate. Then she took a few minutes to add up the scores and tell me where Chloe landed. I fully expected the usual 'she's really far behind' answer because that's what we usually get on all of Chloe's tests. But today Chloe can proudly say.......

Chloe is 26-months-old, but the test indicated that she is able to understand at a 29-month-old level! Of course because of her apraxia and poor fine motor skills, here ability to communicate to others is far below her age level. But the therapist said she often sees when children struggle in one area, they excel in others because they spend more time doing what they are able to do. That is the case with Chloe. She doesn't run around exploring and playing with toys. She just sits and listens to me and other adults communicate. She just soaks it all up! She really is smart as a whip, but just in a body that doesn't work like we'd like it to. I'm so proud of her!

Taking Shape!

They say that it's good when you're trying to get in shape to put a picture up of yourself in good shape to keep you motivated. I'm taking that same approach with our house. I look at the picture of what I want the house to look like when we're done to keep me motivated....

Today we got the framing done. Do you see - it's starting to take shape!...
Next up on the outside: the roof. Next up on the inside: refinishing the hardwood floors! I'm most excited about covering up the tar paper with our beautiful cement fiber board. *sigh* It is going to be so pretty! The main color of the house will be a light tan, the trim will be white, there will be dark brown shakes on the gables, the roof and accents will be black, and the front door will be cranberry! The anticipated finish date for all the outside work is July 31st. Cross your fingers that we stay on schedule!

Frequent Visitors

Today after lunch with my brother's family and visiting my sister-in-law who just had surgery, Chloe and I went to our main hang out, Primary Children's Medical Center. You know you're a frequent visitor when the man who works at the valet parking recognizes your vehicle and knows which door to get the wheelchair out of, before you even get out of the car! You also know you're a frequent visitor when the security officer says, "Hi Chloe!" as you walk past to go to your appointment. You also know you're a frequent visitor when your computer pulls up the hospital's internet automatically, because you've used it so much that it recognizes it. Oh well! It's not a bad place to hang, and I always seem to make friends with other parents at almost every visit!

Today we are here for Chloe's 4th brain MRI. I was thinking about it today, and realized we get pictures of Chloe's brain more often than we take her to get her regular pictures taken. The brain has a photo shoot every six months. Chloe only gets a photo shoot once a year.

Poor Chloe, they sedate her for her MRI's, and so all day today she could only have clear liquids, and two hours before she couldn't have anything at all! Plus she was supposed to be sleep-deprived, which meant no nap. She is such a trooper, though, she wasn't ornery, even after they gave her an IV! Maybe because she's done this enough to know that getting an IV means getting a prize from the nurses. (Today's prize was a little blue monster!) ....

Since I know she does well under sedation and coming out of sedation, MRI's are no big deal for us these days. While she's sleeping I sing lullabies, digital scrapbook, and at the moment I'm blogging. Isn't she just precious?....

The song I've been singing today is:

Oh, Hush Thee, My Baby - Childrens Songbook

Oh, Hush Thee, My Baby
Oh, hush thee, my baby; A story I’ll tell,
How little Lord Jesus On earth came to dwell;
How in a far country,Way over the sea,
Was born a wee baby, My dear one, like thee.
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby dear.
sleep, little baby; have nothing to fear.
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby dear.
Jesus will care for his little one here.
(The last line is my favorite!)

That song is oh-so appropriate for us. Whenever I'm with Chloe, in the hospital setting especially, I feel angels everywhere! Who better to be frequent visitors in your life than angels! I think angels surround Chloe because she's an angel herself. It is so comforting to know that she is well taken care of (and it takes a lot of pressure off me)! =)

I've gotta run. The little blue monster is trying to steal my snacks!....
