Well, this past weekend when we were at the cabin, time stood still for a moment when my dad announced that he had forgotten his ipod. This man loves his country music, and none of us could imagine him going an entire weekend without it.
And then I realized my moral duty to come out of the closet. The classic country music closet, that is. Dad was surprised, to say the least, that my iPod was filled with plenty of his classic country songs.
He was surprised because, growing up, I always begged to listen to 'my music' instead of 'his music.'But as I ventured out on my own, I realized his music had become part of my music. A road trip was not complete without some good ol' country songs, which is why every road trip I go on starts out with this song....
Always on My Mind - Willie Nelson (it won't let me embed the video for some reason, but it's worth a visit to the link)
When Oby asked my dad's permission for my hand in marriage, he also asked if my dad would play and sing 'our song' at the wedding. Of course he did. It was the song we first danced to as a married couple!
And, sidenote, I had 'I Believe in You' engraved on Oby's wedding ring. I had it all ready to go in plenty of time for the wedding. But the day before the wedding when I was packing, I was looking at the ring and realized - it was HUGE and would not fit Oby's finger. I took it back and they gave me another ring that was the correct size, but there wasn't time to engrave the new ring. I had good intentions of taking it back to be engraved, but, well.... it hasn't happened (yet).
And now Oby and I have another classic country song that symbolizes our love and marriage. Oh man, if you could see us when this song comes on in the car. It's quite a spectacle! Chloe LOVES it too, she laughs and dances and watches her mom and dad immitate Johnny and June....
So, there you have it. I'm no cowgirl, but I'm a lot more like my dad than even he knew!....
Do you have any musical confessions you'd like to share?

I LOVE Johnny Cash!
That is a very sweet post. I love that you aquired a taste for the music your Dad loves. It's so sweet. And that Oby loves it too is too too perfect. I love it!
I like lots of different types of music. I can't think of anything too embarrasing at the moment. :)
That was a great post Tara!
I love Johnny Cash as well! :)
My confession would be that I like Britney Spears...*blushing*
I love Patsy Cline. And Don Williams. And Johnny and June. I'm so not surprised by your "closet confession." And I love that your dad sang at your wedding. I remember you talking about that YEARS ago. I'm glad it happened!!
My music embarrassment: I'm a Blockhead. I love New Kids on the Block and have since circa 1989. When the rumors began that they were reuniting, my sister emailed me right away and I laughed it off secretly pleased with the reunion.
I love me some Johnny Cash (he's in the Country Music and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) and Pasty Cline! Willie Nelson is AWESOME too!
I am also a closet country fan (I dont' usually let my DC city folk friends know) so I can totally relate.
Good music is good music, genre doesn't matter. We love country, ragtime, cajun, zydeco, rock, you name it, even Broadway Show tunes.
Oh Tara, you country girl you!
Ya know, I really don't like country...it seams every girl you meet at least likes a few songs but I'm just not into it!
My music confessions? Well before I lost my total ipod library I had some Hilary Duff on there. I think it came from my sister, ssshhh don't tell!
ahh bet dad is tearing up reading this today!
Tara- that was a GREAT post!
I also grew up with this music and will always be a country gal at heart. I haven't listened to it in soooo long. I had tears in my eyes I sang Crazy with the kiddies! Ryan loved watching the videos and dancing to them. Thnx!
My music confessions? hmmmm...well I like a little of everything (except rap and heavy metal) but I love classical. I played the violin while in school. I also LOVE broadway tunes! I wish I could see a show every weekend. :)
Awww you big mouthed woman!!!! The Jonas brothers......I just don't know what to say to that.
Awwwww....but you ARE a cowgirl!
My 17yo is a huge Johnny Cash fan. She even named her dog Johnny Cash (she calls him Cash).
Because of my kids I have to admit to enjoying jonas bros. Intact they are what I workout to! I also enjoy a few country songs now and then. I have gotten my kids into roger miller.
Well, the only musical confession I have is that I like Metro Station... a band which, coincidentally, contains Miley's brother Trace. :-)
Fueling my inner tween, I say.
I've been obsessed with Johnny Cash and June Carter since I saw Walk The Line (one amazing movie). Most of the music playing in our home lately is Laurie Berkner and other kiddie music, but when my husband takes the kids out of the house, I blast Bruce Springsteen. I mean, BLAST!
Good ol' Johnny Cash, hehe...you go girl! My confession...I work out to Brittney Spears beats and I knew she'd make a comeback....sssshhh, don't tell anyone!
Jamie :-)
I have to say I am a country fan myself!! My secret music confession is I love Neil Diamond and Barry Manalow also!! LOve THEM! :) :0 THose were the songs my dad listened to. I loved this post it made me tear up. I lost my dad in a car accident 8 years ago and he was a jolly guy and our family cornerstone!! I miss the heck out of him!! So cherish those moments!! Loved this post Tara! YOu brought back some great memories for me!! Thanks!
Ray Stevens "the Streak" and "Guitarzan" - find them and listen. You'll laugh at how bad they are. It comes from my dad... we would leave for vacations at 10:00 and drive through the night with everybody sleeping in the back of the motorhome. I'd sit up front with my dad to "keep him awake" and get to drink soda and eat pringles and watch the miles pass in the atlas... "68 miles to Nevada, Dad."
They're on my cleaning list and my driving list.
Everyone has some country in their heart... it just sometimes hard to embrace it!
Your dad sounds too cute!
Love 'If I were a Carpenter' by J & J Cash.
It's really odd, but usually I can take or leave country music, but I love Hank Williams Sr. (not Jr.). I used to sing "hey good looking, whatcha got cooking." to my oldest son when he was a baby. My husband introduced me to his music and I just loved it for some reason. I do like Johnny Cash too, and some Waylon Jennings. (Shhh...but I like Miley and the Jonas Brothers too.)
don't tell anyone... but i'm a britney fan!! AAAHHHHH
*sshhhhh* it;s a secret!
