"I'm not a 'princess', am I?"

I have to indulge myself for a moment, and share a memory from my single days. During that time, my guy friends always complained about girls acting like 'princesses.' There was a very negative connotation of a girl being anything like a princess. I tried explaining to them that all girls really were princesses and should be treated like queens, but agreed that it was wrong of them to expect such treatment.

On one of my birthdays, my roommates planned a sushi outing in honor of my big day, and greeted me at the restaurant door with lots of friends, balloons, gifts, and (of all things) a Happy Birthday tiara. The lame-o I was dating at the time called to tell me Happy Birthday and he was sorry he couldn't make it to the party because he had to work out. I admittedly went into pout mode and he told me that I was such a princess, and hung up. I was distressed about the exchange and turned to the group, "I'm not a 'princess', am I?" They collectively burst into laughter. There happened to be a mirror at the head of the table. My friend turned me toward my reflection and said, "Why don't you answer that question for yourself." There was my reflection staring back at me (tiara front and center), and the answer glaring me in the face: Yes, I am a princess. This was before I owned a digital camera, or I'd share some funny pictures from that night. To this day, some of the friends who were there that night call me 'Princess Tara.'

The next year for my birthday, I was with the same group of friends in Vegas for a golfing getaway. They surprised me with a Birthday celebration at the Jimmy Buffet restaurant. There was a man making balloons, and he graced me with a tiara, in honor of the 'princess' moment the year before.

The princess joke continued at my bridal shower.

Now I'm a mother to my own little princess, tiara 'n all. A goofy little princess, to be exact.

Chloe's absolute favorite book is called Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? On the last page it says, "Mommy, are princesses at all like me?" "Look inside yourself and see." Then there's a mirror (which all babies, including Chloe, LOVE) with the words, "A princess is a place in your heart." Whenever we get to that part of the book, I always point to Chloe's reflection and tell her she's a princess. She kicks and giggles in excitement! Afterall, all girls really are princesses!

So when my friend put the link to a quiz that will tell you which Disney Princess you are, I quickly indulged.
