Getting it Right... With Beans?!?!

Today we took Chloe to Occupational Therapy. We're really trying to get her to start using her right hand. She can use it, she just really prefers the left and her right hand is always in a fist! Getting her to use that hand is a pre-cursor to many other milestones, especially crawling, so I'm anxious about it!

First, her OT Julia (who is so fabulous, by the way) tried encouraging the use of her right hand by putting shaving cream on Chloe's mirror reflection....

That was a no-go because, well, Mommy wasn't holding her.

Then we tried banging rattles together. This was somewhat entertaining, but only for awhile, because she kept dropping the rattle out of the right hand. Hello.... Not the point, Chloe!

THEN they brought out the beans....

She immediately grabbed a handful in both hands. She was instantly smitten with the beans!

And so began her new love of beans. I've had her play with textures like rice and pasta before, but nothing hit the spot like these darn beans! She was raking them equally with BOTH hands, and she would have done it all day long if we would have let her, but the appointment was scheduled to be only an hour, so that was that.

I guess I'll have to get some beans for her to play with at home! Julia even suggested filling a small swimming pool with beans and letting Chloe literally immerse herself in beans. Okay, that will be funny. And of course I'll post pix!

BEANS, of all things.... Who knew?!?!?

Then we ordered Benik Splints for both her hands. These will help keep her fingers, thumbs, and wrist in correct anatomical placement, especially her right hand! I'm excited to get them. I ordered them in PINK, of course!

We had beans in a big plastic bin that will fit under the bed in one nursery and the kids loved it. We would put out a big bed sheet and let them go. The container was a great way to store them. Good luck! Can't wait to see the pics of her new splints!!! I love seeing pictures of Chloe and so do the girls. They ask me to pull up your blog everyday to see what is new.

I too had a thing for beans :). Just don't let her put them up her nose, like I did. Amy would know about beans, too. :) Seriously though, that is really exciting. We are all rooting for her. --Seth
