Adventure Playground

Our city mayoral election is this week, and once I know who the new mayor is, I'm going to present a formal plan for Chloe's Sunshine Playground, and hopefully we can agree on location and start moving forward. What that means: it's getting to be crunch time, and I needed some final inspiration while I finalize those formal plans. We went to an accessible playground in Logan, an hour from our house, called Adventure Playground. It was just built in September and I wanted to check it out!....

The playground was quite big and had lots of ramps. There were lots of aspects I liked about the playground, especially the musical instruments:

Chloe definitely had fun!....

But, if I can be frank, there are a lot of things I hope to do differently in our park. I think the "accessible" concept is broad, and while I'm sure the park is accessible to a wider variety of children than most parks, I didn't find it to be truly accessible to children in wheelchairs. The toys that were available at different levels of the ramps were too low for Chloe's legs to go under, so she couldn't really play with them:

They had a high-back swing, but it didn't have straps.

Um, I have a thing about straps, especially lately! But really, there would be no way for Chloe to sit in that swing without falling out. She did still have fun, though, swinging with Daddy:

It really was a fantstic park! I also really loved the rubber tiles they used.... they were extra bouncy! It was a beautiful day and I was inspired to get our plans finalized for Sunshine Playground.

If anyone has any other pros and/or cons about parks they've been to (accessible or otherwise), feel free to leave a comment so I can take your experience into consideration while I get things formalized.

I'm starting to get excited!

You. Are. Amazing.

Keep going with this. Take it all the way until you watch the final tile laid.

I wish I had some suggestions for you. I've been sitting here racking my brain. My only requirements for a playground are that the kids get some exercise and can use their imaginations. Kids never get enough imaginative play in their days. Mine don't, at least.

I love you so much and I hope you can get your groove on so this is set to build soon!

Oh I am so totally offended...YOU CAME TO LOGAN AND DIDN''T EVEN CALL ME?!! I guess I know where I sit on your totem poll.

Yeah...about the straps. It seems to me that most high back swings start out with straps and then very quickly lose them. We had a couple of parks with swings meant for special needs kids and the straps lasted for a few weeks tops. So look into that!

Tara--
Check out accessibleplayground.net. It has a directory of accessible playgrounds from throughout North America. There are a lot of pictures you to give you idea. (If I already wrote and told you about this--sorry). I did pot information about your scapebook fundraiser under unique fundraisers.

Good luck.

I love Chloe's new smile. It's angelic. Something about a missing tooth adds to a kid's smile. I don't have a thing to say advice-wise about the playground. I just know it's gonna be incredible because you are not going to let it be anything but perfect.

Ok, can I just say how cute Chloe looks with her missing tooth? She is such a cutie!
