I Can

Today was our long-awaited visit to Now I Can, an intensive physical therapy center in Provo. WOW. It's a pretty impressive place, that's for sure!

I was impressed with the therapy modules, the therapists and their approach.

Chloe, however, was more impressed with the handsome office worker and therapist. Boy oh boy was she being a flirt.... giggling, kissing, sending suggestive glances their way!

This wasn't an actual therapy visit, but a screening - a chance for us to meet the staff, tour the building, and a chance for them to meet Chloe and get a feel for her limitations and potential.

They had her in all kinds of poses to see how much she could handle and how her body would respond. She sported a flirty smile and luring laugh during every single pose! Plus her pants were off because she's so skinny and they kept falling down. A big flirty girl who can't keep her pants on is not such a great combo, unless she's as cute and innocent as Chloe ;) ....

"Look, I can lift my head!"
"Look, I can pose on my side!"

"Look, I can rest on my elbows!"

"Look, I can stand and sit!!!"

They told me she's BURSTING with POTENTIAL. (Of course I knew that already!)

They said they've seen children with similar deficiencies and tone as Chloe achieve head control and sit unassisted after 3 weeks of the intensive therapy (4-hours a day, 5 days a week) and they see no reason that she couldn't achieve those goals after a 3-week session as well. Then their ideal schedule would be for Chloe to have two 3-week sessions per year and her abilities would improve drastically with each session.

WOW. Can you even imagine if Chloe could control her head and sit unassisted? And then maybe more?

There was a little girl doing therapy while we were there who had traveled here from New York. She was probably 7 or so and was super social and cute with Chloe. She said she learned how to walk while she was here! I can only imagine the day that Chloe will say,

"Now I can walk!"

7 or 77. I hope she will say that to me one day. If she can't it won't really matter, but I can hope and so I do.

Oh, plus there's a fashionable little outfit (called a neurosuit) she gets to wear while doing the therapy. Chloe's just dying to get into this little number....

My approach with Chloe has been to try everything, then keep doing what works (if we can afford it). We're going to make ourselves afford this and see if Chloe responds to it. It is expensive, but in a way, we can't afford NOT to try. We're hoping to start her first session in January!

Sometimes I wonder since we've tried so many treatments, and many have been expensive, if people think we are just grasping at straws for a miracle. And then if I think about it for more than 5 seconds, I realize that I don't actually care if people think that or not. We're not grasping at straws. We're not desperate. I couldn't love Chloe more if her physical abilities progressed or regressed. But SHE wants to use her body. SHE wants to be social. She's happy regardless, but she wants it. And so I'll do what it takes, I'll try everything. It's not what I will try and what I will do, but what I won't do.... There's NOTHING I won't do to work toward giving her the chance to run and jump and play with her friends. To twirl in a tutu.

Maybe she won't.

But.....

Maybe she will.

And so there's no choice. We'll try everything. I can't fly her to the moon so there's no gravity weighing her down. But I can do this. And so I will.

"When I was young, I'd often say,
I'd like to be a mom someday
While playing with my baby doll,
I thought that job's not hard at all

I'd have a baby, maybe two,
a girl in pink...a boy in blue
Well I grew up and sure enough,
I'm now a mom and gosh it's tough

The baby that was sent to me,
was born with disabilities
At first I'm frightened through and through,
there's much to learn to care for you

This wasn't in my plans at all,
when I was young and played with dolls
Your mind and body were so weak,
you might not ever walk or speak

So much special care required,
I'm often scared and often tired
As months and years go slowly by,
I smile a lot but sometimes cry

To watch you grow and not complain,
though you endure your share of pain
Oh, how I'd hold you and I'd pray,
that you'd be healed and whole someday

But I knew that was not to be,
not physically or mentally
And so I taught you best I could,
your progress wasn't always good

But then one day I realized,
as I gazed into your loving eyes
That I had learned so much from you,
determination...courage too

A love so unconditional,
it floods my soul and always will
I'm proud to say I gave you birth,
for you're an angel here on earth."

BL

This weekend we went to BL (Bear Lake). Not to be confused with BM (Battle Mountain) where my MIL and SIL went. They said there was an actual "BM" on the mountain! Too funny!

This was a "last hurrah" of sorts for the summer. Chloe starts school soon (yikes!) and I start working full time tomorrow (double yikes!). I have a heavy heart about it all, but I'm sure it will all work out. In the meantime, it's nice to enjoy blue skies and sand between our toes while we can!....

Good thing I took all those pictures. Otherwise I wouldn't remember a thing about what went on or who was there because I was completely immersed in the 2nd book of the Hunger Games trilogy. If you haven't already read it, you have to -- you just have to!

Chloe's Crush

Today we saw Chloe's neurologist, Dr. Lloyd. I've talked about how much we love him before. I had "shoot the messenger" issues with him in the beginning, since he was the one who explained about Chloe's issues. But I quickly learned to adore him. He's just a big giant teddy bear, who happens to also be a genius and specialist in his field....

Chloe loves him too. She gives him big smiles, laughs and kicks when she sees him. Today she kept sending him big kisses too!

But what she was really crushin' on was the white hospital bed paper. This girl LOVES the stuff. Check her out in the pic with Dr. Lloyd.... There she is with this man she loves, but she's still got an eye on the paper! What a silly silly girl!!!

We haven't seen Dr. Lloyd in about a year. He was so encouraged by all the progress she has made since he saw her. It was so heart-warming to hear that. Since I see her every single day, I sometimes miss or forget about the "inch-stones."

Dr. Lloyd has a 15-year-old daughter with issues very similar to Chloe. During most of our visit, we just sat and chatted like old friends about things our girls are doing, therapy we've tried or would like to try, giving each other tips. He is so humble and kind, I wish everyone had a doctor like him!!!

And I know you're thinking, 'Oh no she di'n't!' But oh yes, I did..... put David Archuleta's "Crush" as the soundtrack for this post. Don't judge. It went with the title.

Real Love

You weren’t like other children,
And God was well aware,
You’d need a caring family,
With love enough to share.
And so He sent you to us,
And much to our surprise,
You haven’t been a challenge,
But a blessing in disguise.
Your winning smiles and laughter,
The pleasures you impart,
Far outweigh your special needs,
And melt the coldest heart.
We’re proud that we’ve been chosen,
To help you learn and grow,
The job that you have brought us,
Is more than you can know.
A precious gift from Heaven,
A treasure from above,
A child who’s taught us many things,
But most of all, “Real Love.”

Oby & Chloe @ Butterfly Lake

Oby decided everything we were doing was too cutie-fruity, so he had to include some manly activities.

First the chainsaw....

Then the knife....

Is it me, or does it feel like summer is coming to a quick close?

Good thing we looooove fall!

Family Tree

Yesterday was a family day! We had breakfast with my parents, then headed up to Salt Lake to go to a Bennett family reunion, but not before a quick visit with Grandpa Taylor. Grandpa had to show off his motorized wheelchair, cruising up and down the street - Chloe was jealous! I promised her she could get a cool motorized wheelchair someday....

Grandpa Taylor & Chloe -- wheelchair buds!

Then it was time for the family reunion. It was fun getting together with all these people we are forever tied to on the genealogical tree....

Dancing Queens!

Just when I think life couldn't get any better, today happened.

Chloe started dance.

It never ceases to amaze me what life has to offer.... Chloe in dance class? WOW.....

It was so special to be in a room where wheelchairs, DAFO's, and walkers were the norm, yet dance wasn't out of the question!!!....

Each child was assigned a 'shadow' to help them learn and do the moves. Chloe's shadow was Rachel, a very sweet 14-year-old girl. She was very kind and comfortable with Chloe because she has two siblings with a genetic disorder who are in wheelchairs. Chloe just adored her!....

Chloe was a pretty big fan of Lisa, the teacher, as well....

They did stretches and warm-ups....

And there was lots of laughing, giggling and chatting....

THANK YOU, Dance Image! We loved the class and look forward to new friendships, dancing and fun!!!....
