Chloe had a routine neurology appointment today. It is impossible for me to fully express how much I love her neurologist, but let me try....
He personally came to the waiting room to get Chloe and I. I said, "Wow, such service!" He said, "I wanted to help you with the stroller and your bags, and I was just so excited to see Chloe!"
I know. So sweet. I personally don't know any other doctor who would ever do that.
I told him about the new hand braces. I said how I liked them, but they were hard to get on. He said, "I know. My daughter has to wear braces too and they can be frustrating to work with."
I knew his daughter had neurologic issues, but every single time he relates to me like that, I just feel like I'm sitting there with a true friend who really gets me. He has cried with me, laughed with me, rolled his eyes at insurance policies and scheduling difficulties with me. And I know he's not just trying to appease me or be likable - he really gets it. He has a Chloe of his own.
Oh, and when I told him how someone donated the stander, his eyes welled with tears. He was so genuinely happy that Chloe was now getting the therapeutic benefits she needed, and touched by the goodness of others.
As he did Chloe's typical exam, he was looking at Chloe's eyes (because they've drifting out again lately), and Chloe started smiling and laughing and opened her mouth (that's what she does when she wants a kiss). Chloe loves him just as much as he loves her and as much as I love him. It's just one big love fest every time we go.
He's setting us up with pre-school and speech therapy at the local Shriner's Hospital. That will probably start when she turns 2 (in May).
We talked about her DAFO braces. He was concerned that she doesn't wear them throughout the day, only when we do exercises, because they dont' fit exactly perfectly, so long-term wearing is actually counter-productive. I told him I had accepted their imperfections because my insurance company wouldn't pay for another pair until she had grown out of these. He told me not to worry about that, that he would personally ensure that a sponsor would cover the cost so she could get braces that fit correctly. A new set of DAFO's are already ordered.
He said we didn't need to do an EEG because he wasn't worried about her current seizure activity. I only gave a look, I didn't say anything. He was aware that I wanted an EEG. I said I just would rather know there isn't any new seizure activity. He also knows that, for some reason, as fabulous as Primary Children's Hospital is for the most part..... the EEG scheduling is one of the most frustrating processes I have experienced. And I cannot figure out why. It seems like pretty basic stuff, but it always takes an army to get an EEG scheduled.
Anyway, her neurologist knows this. So he personally walked me up to the counter to schedule the EEG and make sure there weren't problems getting it scheduled as soon as possible. When the person started the typical frustrating schedule rigamaroo, the neurologist just went behind the counter and personally input our EEG appointment for next week. Easy peasy.
So hopefully I have sufficiently given props to Chloe's neurologist that he deserves. He is fantastic, and makes me feel that we are truly getting the best care available. There is nothing more comforting to me as a mother.

Knowing how hard it is to find a great doctor, I am so happy that you have been blessed to find this guy! He sounds like he will be such a fabulous advocate for your lovely girl...happy thoughts for you all:)
You are blessed to have found him.
I feel the same way about our pediatrician and about my 12yo's developmental specialist. Our pediatrician really takes the time to get to know each of my kids and is there for anything we need. My 12yo's specialist is the same way--even when we moved to another state she would let us call her and ask questions and make appointments when we were concerned. It's so hard to find a doctor that you like and so very special when you do. I am so happy that you have found that for Chloe. :)
We are all truely blesssed that people like that enter into our lives. It definately lets us know that we are Heavenly Fathers Children and that he loves us all and wants the best for us. I understand how hard it is being at the time of life that you and Oby are in. If there is ever any way emotionaly, physicaly, or monetarily that we can help please let us know. Brian does work for Abbott and if Chloe is on any meds made by them we can see what we can do.
Our prayers are with you daily. I can't wait till I can come and see that cutie pie!!! Love you all!!!
We've been to different specialists over the years and I can say you have found a keeper! For whatever reason most of them have horrible bedside manners. But of course how the heck could he resist Chloe's smile? I don't think ANYONE could:)
He sure sounds like a fabulous doctor! You and Chloe are very lucky to have someone like him on your side:0)
Wow, what a blessing. As someone who has a speacialist of her own I am totally jealous! LOL. That is truly awesome. I am glad you have him.
What a wonderful man and fabulous doctor. He truly is an angel here on earth.

Oh wow, that is so great for you and Chloe! It is so rare to get a doctor that genually cares for their patients as a people and not just cases.
You are very lucky in that regard! Look at you, always lookin on the bright side of things!
That's amazing. It sounds like he was meant to be a neurologist. What a fantastic blessing to have through all of this.
That's wonderful.
A good doctor is so hard to find.
That just made me cry. Isn't it wonderful to find people who can help our children heal and who CARE? Our ENT who has now worked on three of our children and done six surgeries has really started warming up to us and it is so nice.
we've had some great drs and some not so great ones too.
i'm glad you have a great one!
trinity wore DAFOs for quite a while. i hated them.. :( until i found those hatchback shoes that fit over them decently and looked cute. i would always put her in dresses and then she'd have these big old honkin shoes on.. thankfully she doesn't wear them anymore.
have you heard of TheraTogs????
I am so glad that Chloe has a Dr. that is so wonderful!

My name is Loretta. I work at Cascade Dafo and I'm distressed that you felt you needed to put up with a less than perfect fit for Chloe. We warranty our braces for any fit or function problems and want to help you resolve them. Please don't settle for anything less than a Dafo that fits and functions properly for your daughter. We're here to help. Call us at 1-800-848-7332, you can ask for me or for anyone in our technical support department.
Sincerely yours,
